Five members of Kolenchery’s Punnackal family donated over 13 cents worth about ₹1.3 crore to widen Canal Bund Road from three to six metres.
Key facts
Six Kolenchery residents—Jacob P Varghese, Sumi George, Rony Thampi, Suja Shaju, Jithu Elias and Binoy Chacko Mudavanthiyil—are supporting the widening of Canal Bund Road without compensation. The road runs from the Tempo Stand on the Kochi-Madurai National Highway to the self-financing section of St. Peter’s College along Kolenchery-Pulinchodu Road. Five Punnackal family members across three generations surrendered over 13 cents; Binoy agreed to remove a building pillar. At nearly ₹10 lakh per cent, the land is worth about ₹1.3 crore.
The family had donated a roughly 3-metre-wide, 180-metre-long strip—about 13 cents—nearly two decades ago to create the original road. The widening will take it from 3 metres to 6 metres. Poothrikka Panchayat plans to build a retaining wall, tar the road and install metal rail guards. A cut-and-cover system over the Periyar Valley canal is also proposed. The road is expected to ease congestion and improve access to Thammanimattam, Kinginimattam, Karukappilli and Poothrikka, as well as the college, Panchayat Vegetable Market and Cooperative Bank.
