Periyar Nagar Residents Seek Repairs to Unmotorable Roads

Indiatimes · · Infrastructure

Residents of Coimbatore’s Periyar Nagar say roads have gone unrepaired for two decades and petitioned the corporation mayor for a solution.

Key facts

Residents of Periyar Nagar in ward 7 petitioned Coimbatore corporation mayor R Ranganayaki on Tuesday over unmotorable streets. The 12.18-acre residential layout was formed in 1985 under Kalapatti town panchayat and brought within corporation limits in 2011. Kalapatti Periyar Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association executive member G Vaman said roads laid 20 years ago had not been repaired or relaid. The original layout plan approved 138 plots; the area has since expanded with villas and apartments, but some lanes remain earthen and become messy during rainfall.

Consumer Body Alleges Excess Property Tax Demands in Vadavalli

The Hindu · · Regulatory

Coimbatore Consumer Cause petitioned municipal authorities over alleged four half-yearly tax demands annually for a Vadavalli property, seeking correction of records.

Key facts

Coimbatore Consumer Cause petitioned the Director of Municipal Administration on June 3 over a Vadavalli property assessed under Property Tax Assessment No. 162/036/900066. It alleged the Coimbatore Corporation’s demand register showed four half-yearly property tax demands in every financial year from 2018-19 onwards, although only two should be raised annually. The additional entries allegedly inflated the demand for eight years.

The senior-citizen owner reportedly discovered the discrepancy while trying to pay dues. The organisation said repeated representations, visits to Corporation offices and online grievances had not corrected the records; online complaints were marked “resolved” without rectification or explanation. It asked the Director to direct officials to verify the records, correct the demand register and enable payment of the correct tax.
