Guwahati VIP Road gets Rs 15.59 crore pedestrian-friendly makeover

Guwahati's 5.4-km VIP Road stretch will be redeveloped with safer crossings, streetlights, CCTV, parking and new footpaths starting January 2026.

Key facts

VIP Road in Six Mile area of Guwahati, which connects Dispur and links to Morigaon district, is set for major infrastructure overhaul. The 5.4-km stretch up to Patharquarry will be redeveloped into a pedestrian-friendly corridor at estimated cost of Rs 15.59 crore.

Project will be jointly executed by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Town and Country Planning (T&CP) and Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL).

Improvements include:

Junctions redesigned for safer crossings
Streetlights and CCTV cameras installed
Bollards and railings added for pedestrian safety
On-street parking created for smoother traffic flow
New footpaths constructed

Work expected to begin January 2026. VIP Road is lined with schools, hospitals, shops and residential colonies. Residents have long complained about inadequate infrastructure, particularly poor street lighting.
