Encroachments Removed Along Madurai-Dindigul Highway Toward Paravai
thehindu · · Infrastructure
Officials removed road encroachments along the Fatima College–Paravai stretch after a Madras High Court directive, with further clearance planned toward Samayanallur.
Key facts
Corporation and Highways Department officials removed encroachments along the Madurai-Dindigul highway from Fatima College to Paravai on Wednesday, November 27, following directions from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Sheds belonging to eight shops and ramps of six shops were removed. The Highways Department was to continue the operation from Paravai toward Samayanallur on Thursday, November 28.
The directions arose from a 2023 public interest litigation filed by Paravai resident N. Senthil Kumar seeking road safety measures. The court had earlier directed officials to install adequate streetlights. The stretch between Fatima College and Samayanallur falls within the jurisdictions of Madurai City’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), the Madurai Corporation Commissioner, and Samayanallur and Paravai town panchayats.
Justices M.S. Ramesh and A.D. Maria Clete directed the Corporation Commissioner, police and other officials to attend an inspection of the road at about 5:30 p.m. on November 29.
