Neglected Paruthipattu Green Park Raises Concerns Among Avadi Residents

Paruthipattu Green Park in Avadi faces poor lighting, broken toilets, litter and sewage pollution, prompting residents to seek better maintenance and security.

Key facts

Paruthipattu Green Park, built for ₹28.16 crore and opened in 2019 as part of efforts to revive the 87-acre Paruthipattu Lake, draws more than 1,000 residents daily. It has a 3-km walking track, open-air theatre, children’s play area, boating facility, library, parking and food court.

A dysfunctional nearby sewage treatment facility allows untreated waste from residential areas, commercial establishments and stormwater drains to pollute the lake, causing foul odours. Residents report rubbish on the walking track, dim lights and broken toilets. A private agency’s sanitation workforce has fallen from more than 10 workers to two, who sweep only the entrance. The park closes at 6.30pm; residents have requested opening until at least 8pm, more benches and streetlights, and police patrols after 6pm. Avadi Corporation officials said additional sanitation and security staff, measures to keep stray dogs out, and a review of park timings would be considered.
