Worker Killed in Landslide at Kozhikode Construction Site

A landslide at a Palazhi flat construction site killed one worker and injured two, prompting residents to question approval and monitoring in landslide-prone areas.

A section of land collapsed at an under-construction flat in Palazhi, Kozhikode, around 11 am on Sunday, 29 June, while piling work was underway. Three workers were trapped. Elanchal, 30, a native of West Bengal, died; two others were rescued with minor injuries. His body was found after a two-hour search involving fire and police personnel and a JCB machine.

A neighbour said part of the land had slipped two days earlier and workers and the building owner had been warned. Residents had also complained six months ago, when construction began, despite the project having official approval. Locals said the area is landslide-prone and used as a walkway, and questioned project approvals and monitoring.

District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh convened a meeting for January 17 with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Project Director, officials and protesters over toll collection at the Olavanna (Pantheerankavu) plaza on the NH-66 Vengalam–Ramanattukara stretch of Kozhikode Bypass. Protests led by District Congress Committee president K. Praveenkumar began January 15, when tolling started, and continued on January 16. Protesters said incomplete, narrow service roads force residents to use the highway and pay repeatedly for short trips. Pantheerankavu North ward member N. Muraleedharan said required service-road widths of 5–5.5 metres had not been met and there was no proper bridge crossing. NHAI Project Director Prashant Dubey said completed service roads were toll-free; delays were due to land acquisition, and residents within 20 km qualified for concessional monthly passes.

The Kerala Human Rights Commission registered a case over pedestrian access on the Palazhi service road and directed the NHAI Project Director to report within 15 days. The complaint said around 300 households were affected. A hearing is scheduled at Kozhikode PWD Rest House in February.
