NH Roadwork Delays Draw Complaints in Dindigul District

The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

Villagers are protesting delays to the ₹164.68-crore NH project between Dindigul and Oddanchatram, with officials targeting completion by June 2025.

Key facts

Work on the NH 209 project connecting Dindigul and Oddanchatram began on January 21, 2023, and was originally due for completion in June 2024. The project costs ₹164.68 crore. Palakunnathu panchayat president J Selvi said no work had been carried out since Pongal and that traffic jams stretch over four kilometres between Semmapadapatti and Moolachatram on weekends. The four-lane road and overbridge divide the village; vehicles travelling between Madurai and Coimbatore use the route. Oddanchatram CPM secretary K Balasubramaniam said the overbridge has remained incomplete for two years. The 456-km highway includes a 25-km Oddanchatram–Palani NH 209 section, of which 17.175 km is to be developed. An NHAI official cited more than 12 large gaps along the stretch as a cause of coordination delays, and said work was targeted for completion by June 2025, with public use expected in September or October 2025.
