After landslides killed four people in Mathgharia and Satgaon, Assam authorities pledged compensation and relocation for residents living in vulnerable hillside areas.

Key facts

Three members of a family were killed when a rain-triggered landslide buried their Mathgharia home on September 1: Nagen Rajbanshi, his wife Sonu Rajbanshi and daughter Meena Rajbanshi. Their son, Biplab Rajbanshi, was rescued alive.

Dimoria MLA Tapan Das said the government would compensate the family and arrange downhill relocation for people living in dangerous hillside conditions. Guwahati Municipal Corporation Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phookan said the civic body would coordinate with the district administration and electricity department to assist rescue and relief operations.

A second landslide in Satgaon killed P. Sumitra when a rock reportedly fell onto a house; four others inside were safe. Guwahati has 366 officially designated landslide-prone locations: Sunsali Hill 77, Noonmati 40, Kharguli 37, Khanapara 33, Narangi 31 and Hengrabari 30.

Assam has shortened the planned Dighalipukhuri–Noonmati flyover and ruled out cutting nearby trees after public protests over the historic tank’s surroundings.

Key facts

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the site of the planned flyover connecting Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati in Guwahati on Tuesday night. Following protests by citizens’ groups seeking to preserve trees around Dighalipukhuri, a historic tank, the state government decided the trees would not be cut and the flyover would be shortened. The project’s foundation stone was laid in February 2024 for an elevated, four-lane corridor more than 5 km long, with an estimated cost of ₹852.68 crore.

Cotton University Students Protest Tree Felling for Guwahati Flyover

thehillstimes · · Infrastructure

Cotton University students protested tree felling near Dighalipukhuri for a flyover, citing environmental and cultural concerns and demanding an environmental study.

Key facts

On October 28, 2024, Cotton University students organised by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) protested near Dighalipukhuri against trees being felled for a proposed flyover connecting Gauhati Club and Noonmati. Students and environmental advocates said some trees were more than 100 years old, supported bird nests and wildlife, and helped maintain Guwahati’s air quality. Students highlighted Dighalipukhuri’s cultural and emotional ties to nearby Handique Girls’ College and Cotton University. They said authorities had not conducted an environmental impact assessment and called for a dedicated environmental division within the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to study projects and protect natural resources while enabling development.
