PCMC Cancels JNNURM Housing Project, Shifts Focus to PMAY
The planned launch of 6,500 tenements for the low-income group under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has been unexpectedly cancelled, as announced by Municipal Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare. This decision stems from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) initiation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) this year.
Applicants Can Seek Benefits Under PMAY
Beneficiaries who had applied for the 6,500 JNNURM tenements can now apply for benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), pending government approval of the proposal. This new scheme offers an alternative pathway to secure housing assistance.
Earlier Plans Under JNNURM
The PCMC had originally planned to provide 17,920 tenements for slum dwellers and low-income individuals under the JNNURM. These government-constructed houses were designated for areas such as Nigdi, the Link Road between Pimpri and Chinchwad, Milindnagar, Ajanthanaga, Vetalnagar, and Vithalnagar.
Project Faces Setbacks
Construction commenced in 2005, with the PCMC completing 11,420 of the proposed 17,920 tenements. The remaining 6,500 units, initially slated for completion this year, faced unforeseen challenges. A combination of land availability issues and an unfavorable environment contributed to the project's ultimate cancellation. This leaves a significant gap in the planned housing provision for low-income residents of the Pimpri-Chinchwad area.
