Andhra Pradesh's Housing Scheme to Use Energy-Efficient Building Technology

Andhra Pradesh's Housing Scheme

Andhra Pradesh will employ the new 'Indo-Swiss energy-efficient building technology' in its housing scheme: Pedalandariki Illu (housing for all the poor).

Key Features of the Scheme

  • Around 30 lakh affordable housing units will be constructed in the state.
  • The Indo-Swiss energy efficiency technology will lower indoor temperatures by about two degrees, resulting in approximately 20 percent electricity savings.

Training Initiative

As part of the 'Energy Efficiency in Buildings' project, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) through Indo-Swiss BEEP will provide training to engineers and staff in the district and village secretariats and the housing department. This initiative aims to effectively apply the Energy Conservation Building Code-Residential (ECBC-R) in this affordable housing scheme.

  • Initially, 50 engineers will be trained as Master Trainers to provide training to other engineers.

Project Details Explained by Ajay Jain

Chief Secretary of the Housing Department, Ajay Jain, recently attended a webinar hosted by the Indo Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP), India. During the webinar, Jain elaborated on the government's strategy for implementing this ambitious project.

Energy-Efficient Techniques

  • The heat transfer rate to the roof can be reduced through roof insulation or reflective roof paint.
  • Autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, hollow walls, and hollow bricks can further reduce the net heat flow to the building.
  • Window protectors such as blinds or rollers stored outside windows also help reduce the net heat gain.

Construction Plan

The first stage of construction covers about 14 lakh housing units. The government has decided to introduce energy-efficient and thermally comfortable structures in these houses. This housing project will use energy-efficient design strategies in line with the Eco-Niwas Samhita 2018 (ECBC-Residential) Code for BEEP. ECBC-R provides:

  • Adequate natural ventilation
  • Reduces energy consumption by at least 20 percent
  • Improves thermal comfort, natural light, and provides a safer and healthier environment in the houses.
