Zydex Tech eyes laying 20K km green roads in India

hi

Zydex Technologies is planning to construct 20,000 km of moisture-resistant green roads in India by 2016. The firm will employ nanotechnology, a method they have already used to lay highways in the US, Europe, and Africa.

Plans and Benefits

The company aims to utilize this innovative technique over the next three years to provide roads that are not only moisture-resistant but also pothole-free, requiring minimal maintenance for the subsequent 15 years. They have already laid 500 km of such roads.

The Gujarat-based firm has patented its nanotechnology, which significantly reduces water percolation into roads. This technology can save the government approximately Rs 7,200 crore annually on tar alone.

Cost Savings

India's annual tar consumption is around 5 million tonnes, costing about Rs 18,000 crore, of which 85% is used for road repairs. By employing this technology, the lifespan of Indian roads could be doubled. Additionally, the firm claims that using this technology can save the government Rs 21,000 annually for rural roads.

Expansion Plans

The firm is planning to quadruple its capacity to 6,000 tonnes annually at its Vadodara plant, with an investment of Rs 30 crore.

Global Impact

The new technology is gaining appreciation globally, including in Texas, where the firm claims 45% of the roads have been built using it. Zydex Technologies has also received orders from Canada, the US, Germany, Sweden, Nigeria, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, Indonesia, Japan, and several other countries that are rapidly adopting the technology. However, in India, the firm is encountering significant obstacles.

Recent Projects and Future Pursuits

The firm has recently constructed roads in Leh-Ladakh and is pursuing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in various states.
