A Tale of Broken Promises
Zirakpur is one of Punjab's top property tax collectors, yet its people face daily struggles. Potholed roads greet commuters every morning. Overflowing sewers and clogged drains are common sights. The town received a huge Rs 140 crore budget for 2025-26, but where did all that money go?
Residents aren't buying the excuses anymore. KS Walia from Sushma Joynest asks the question everyone's thinking: "There's no accountability among officials." Frustration runs deep across neighbourhoods.
Budget Numbers Don't Add Up
The financial picture looks impressive on paper. Zirakpur Municipal Council allocated Rs 154.6 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 151 crore the year before. Three years of substantial funding, yet the ground reality tells a different story. Roads remain riddled with potholes that become death traps during monsoons.
Empty plots along Patiala road have turned into unofficial dumping yards. Power supply is unpredictable. Water quality tests the patience of residents daily, with dirty water flowing from taps at Exotic Heights in Peermuchhala. The drainage system has completely failed its purpose.
Monsoon Mayhem Exposes Failures
Heavy rains bring the town to a complete standstill. Major crossings like Patiala Chowk and McDonald's Crossing witness bumper-to-bumper traffic. Vehicles crawl through knee-deep water for hours. This isn't a one-time occurrence, residents have endured this annual ordeal for over a decade.
Hope on the Horizon?
The Punjab government announced plans to upgrade Zirakpur to Municipal Corporation status. Two new Sewage Treatment Plants are proposed, one 47 MLD plant at Sanauli and another 37 MLD facility. As per the government, a high-level bridge will be constructed to address flooding.
But residents have heard promises before. They want action, not announcements. The real estate market watches closely as infrastructure quality directly impacts property values and investor confidence in this growing urban centre.
