Ranchi Delivers Over 11,000 PMAY-Urban Homes in Decade-Long Housing Push

Ranchi Celebrates 10-Year Milestone in PMAY-Urban Housing Mission

Ranchi Delivers Over 11,000 PMAY-Urban Homes in Decade-Long Housing Push The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has reached an 88% completion rate under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) program, delivering 11,052 affordable homes in ten years. This achievement places Ranchi at the forefront of India’s national “Housing for All” initiative, with only 535 homes left to reach its original target of 12,587 units as of June 2025.

Ten Years of PMAY-U Success in Ranchi

Launched in 2015, PMAY-Urban aimed to provide permanent homes to economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG). Key achievements include:

  • 88% delivery rate: Surpassed national averages in housing implementation
  • Recent milestones: 183 homes completed between January and June 2025
  • Slum rehabilitation: Reduced urban slums by transitioning residents to formal housing
  • Job creation: Boost employment near construction areas

Celebrations Highlight Progress and Future Plans

RMC recently hosted griha pravesh ceremonies across five wards, including Burdman Compound. Beneficiaries received keys to newly constructed homes alongside plants symbolising “green beginnings.” These events emphasised:

  1. Community engagement: Prioritizing women as primary homeowners
  2. Sustainability focus: Integrating green infrastructure in housing projects
  3. Financial support: Credit-linked subsidies for homebuyers under PMAY

PMAY 2.0 Paves the Way for Expanded Housing Initiatives

Building on this success, India’s PMAY-U 2.0 (launched in 2023) will extend support until 2029 with a ₹10 lakh crore investment. Key features include:

Aspect Detail
Target 1 crore urban households
Funding ₹2.30 lakh crore subsidy
Scope Construction, purchase, and rental assistance
Priority EWS/LIG/MIG households without existing homes

Challenges and Upcoming Goals

While Ranchi’s progress is commendable, persistent challenges remain:

  • Remaining backlog: 535 unfinished homes need prioritization
  • Scalability: Balancing demand with infrastructure capacity
  • Slum relocation: Ensuring proper rehabilitation services

These efforts highlight Ranchi’s commitment to advancing social equity through housing. With PMAY 2.0’s extended mandate, the city aims to solidify its position as a model for sustainable urban development.
