Kolkata: Both the Central and State Governments are taking significant steps to convert Rajarhat Town into a fully operational solar city. This joint venture aims to educate residents on how to effectively harness solar and renewable energy for the essential needs of the community. The estimated expenditure for this ambitious project is around Rs 400 crore, contingent upon the successful execution of all outlined plans.
Recently, senior officials from the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) presented the master plan in the National Capital, receiving an affirmative response from the ministry.
Following this approval, the authority will proceed to develop a comprehensive report detailing the projects necessary for the township's development. Additionally, they will seek the Centre's approval for implementation. Notably, the NKDA has already produced over twelve detailed reports aimed at various aspects of the project.
The solar town master plan focuses on minimizing energy consumption from traditional power sources. It includes two primary strategies devised by the planners: one involves the adoption of solar and renewable energy solutions, while the other emphasizes the utilization of more energy-efficient devices.
Furthermore, the plan encompasses initiatives like the installation of LED lighting, the incorporation of star-rated air conditioning units, and the use of energy-efficient motors and fans. There is also a considerable emphasis on promoting green buildings. In addition, the authorities are contemplating engaging school children through eco clubs to conduct awareness programs, thereby fostering a culture of sustainability.
