Mysuru City Corporation Proposes Grade 1 Upgrade by Merging Four Outskirts Town Panchayats
Mysuru is on the verge of a significant transformation. The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has put forward a daring proposal to the Karnataka State Government. This proposal aims to elevate Mysuru from Grade 2 to Grade 1 Municipal Corporation status by merging one City Municipal Council and four town panchayats located on the city's periphery.
What the Merger Entails
The plan focuses on specific areas for inclusion:
- Hootagalli City Municipal Council
- Kadakola Town Panchayat
- Srirampura Town Panchayat
- Bogadi Town Panchayat
- Rammanahalli Town Panchayat
These areas lie within the Chamundeshwari constituency. Collectively, they extend the MCC's jurisdiction without reaching the large population required for a complete Greater Mysuru configuration, which was previously put on hold due to insufficient numbers.
Officials highlight that this approach reflects the success of Hubballi-Dharwad, now the second-largest corporation in Karnataka after Bengaluru's BBMP.
Why This Upgrade Matters for Urban Growth
Urban expansion is set to become more structured and manageable. With this merger, MCC can deliver consistent services like waste collection, underground drainage, rainwater harvesting and water supply across a wider region. Deputy Commissioner Somashekhar highlighted that nearly 500 more staff will be added, along with better access to state and central funds.
Chamundeshwari MLA GT Devegowda is strongly backing the move, saying faster approvals could boost trade, business activity, and planned growth. At the same time, a key meeting in Bengaluru, chaired by Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh, is moving forward with plans to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
Real Estate Boom on the Horizon
Attention investors. Property prices in these new layouts are set to rise in future. The outskirts will now enjoy city-level benefits, driving up demand for homes and land. Mysuru, already the fastest-growing city in Karnataka after Bengaluru, is eyeing industrial development and major projects like a Peripheral Ring Road and possibly Metro Rail.
The "Nava Mysuru Nirmana" master plan is gaining momentum as well, along with plans for a sports complex. Tourism flourishes with preserved heritage, job opportunities increase, and commerce thrives.
Benefits at a Glance
Residents and buyers can look forward to:
- Expanded Services: UGD, roads, and water supply everywhere.
- Increased Funding: Grants from both the Union and state governments.
- Job Creation: New employment opportunities and business growth.
- Rising Property Values: Particularly in the newly merged areas.
- Planned Development: No more unregulated expansion on the outskirts.
Challenges and Next Steps
MCC's current term concluded in November 2023. There are increasing calls for fresh elections following this upgrade. A gazette change may occur, but support from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seems robust.
This is more than a procedural move. It stands to redefine Mysuru's real estate landscape. The outskirts are becoming valuable. Buyers should consider plots now, before prices surge. Keep an eye on government actions, it could lead to rapid changes in the city.
