Kerala Expands Punargeham Project with 260 New Coastal Rehabilitation Flats

Kerala Government Speeds Up Coastal Housing Initiative

Kerala Expands Punargeham Project with 260 New Coastal Rehabilitation Flats The Kerala state government has launched an ambitious expansion of its flagship Punargeham coastal rehabilitation project, announcing three new housing developments. These will provide 260 additional flats for vulnerable fishing communities. This major expansion follows the successful completion and handover of the 332-unit 'Prathyasha' complex at Muttathara in August 2025.

Three-Phase Development Strategy

Kochuveli Housing Complex is leading the expansion with 168 flats currently under construction near Kochuveli church. The Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) is executing this ₹37.62 crore project. It began two months ago and is set for completion within 18 months.

The Muttathara expansion will add 68 more units on the remaining land next to the existing Prathyasha complex. While environmental clearance from the Union Ministry is pending, administrative sanction is expected within a month.

At Valiyathura, a smaller 24-flat development near the FCI godown has already received administrative approval, completing the trio of new projects.

Meeting Essential Housing Needs

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted the project's importance, stating that these initiatives address urgent housing needs for fishermen between Poonthura and Vettukad who continue living in vulnerable coastal areas. The Punargeham initiative, launched in 2019, specifically targets families residing within 50 meters of the high-tide line.

Each apartment features a living room, kitchen, a small workspace, and two bedrooms, offering modern amenities while ensuring dignified living conditions for displaced coastal families.. The successful Prathyasha complex, located just 500 meters from the shoreline, demonstrates the government's commitment to providing not just shelter but stability and security.

Extensive Rehabilitation Efforts

The broader Punargeham project encompasses the rehabilitation of 5,361 coastal fishermen families across Kerala. Current progress includes 2,488 completed individual houses and 390 flats, with an additional 1,347 houses and 1,136 flats under construction. This comprehensive approach reflects the state's dedication to protecting vulnerable coastal populations from environmental challenges while preserving their proximity to traditional livelihoods.
