Govt to set up platform for SEZs to resolve grievances

New Online Grievance Resolution System for SEZ Developers

The Government has announced plans to introduce a grievance resolving instrument for SEZ (Special Economic Zone) developers. This initiative aims to swiftly address developers' issues and queries, ultimately boosting exports.

Collaboration and Timeline

The Commerce Ministry is collaborating with Export Promotional Councils and SEZs to develop this online system. The ministry aims to launch the platform by the end of December. The primary objective is to provide a forum where SEZ developers can post operational complaints, which will be addressed promptly by the relevant departments.

Phased Implementation

This online instrument will serve as a unified grievance redressal system. Following a successful initial phase, the government will expand the system to include discussions and resolutions related to policy matters.

System Features and Benefits

  • Test Runs: The government will conduct test runs of the proposed system.
  • Grievance Posting: Concerns related to any department, including environmental issues or state government matters, should be posted on the online system.
  • Cost Reduction: The online instrument will help reduce transaction costs, further enhancing exports and manufacturing from these SEZ zones.

Reviving SEZs

SEZs, once major export hubs and investment destinations, have lost some of their appeal due to the economic slowdown and the imposition of the Minimum Alternate Tax.

The government is taking robust steps to rekindle interest in SEZs. These measures include easing land laws and softening other norms. Recent data shows a decline in exports from these zones in the first half of the fiscal year.
