Assocham Appeals for at least 3 SEZs in Goa

Margao, March 7 – The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has made a formal appeal to the State government to revisit its stance on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and has advocated for the establishment of at least three SEZs within Goa. These three proposed SEZs would focus on the sectors of bio and nano-technology, food processing, and solar energy. They are projected to attract investments amounting to Rs 50,000 crore, potentially creating jobs for about 20,000 young individuals over the next three years, as stated by ASSOCHAM.

During a press conference held on Friday, ASSOCHAM President Mr. Venugopal Dhoot emphasized that the proposed SEZs would not necessitate extensive land acquisition, thus easing some of the controversies surrounding the state's previous land requisitions for IT SEZs. He remarked that by prioritizing SEZs in bio, nano, and food processing, Goa stands to gain significant economic benefits, along with job opportunities for its youth.

Mr. Dhoot, who also chairs Videocon Industries Ltd, further revealed that his company has recently acquired approximately 35 acres of land in the state, specifically near Karmali railway station in Old Goa. He elaborated that Videocon is planning to establish a knowledge-based industry and a manufacturing unit in the region, reinforcing their commitment to Goa's development.
