Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma directed officials to conduct a survey of 662 heritage havelis in Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu districts in the Shekhawati region. Conservation and restoration is stated as top priority; the CM noted that a new Act for their conservation could be brought if needed. All heritage monuments in the state should be surveyed and developed as precious Rajasthan heritage. Shekhawati havelis were built by entrepreneurs and merchants in the 18th to early 20th centuries, featuring intricate frescoes with mythological and European subjects. Major towns include Mandawa, Nawalgarh, and Jhunjhunu. The region is called the "open art gallery of Rajasthan."
