Navi Mumbai May Face 10% Water Cut After Diwali
Free Press Journal · · Infrastructure
Navi Mumbai may impose a 10% water cut after Diwali if Morbe Dam fails to fill, as below-average catchment rainfall threatens supplies.
Key facts
Morbe Dam has received about 3,420.80 mm of catchment rainfall this year, compared with roughly 4,000 mm needed to overflow. Its level is 86.19 metres, below the 88-metre overflow mark. The dam supplies around 480 MLD to Navi Mumbai’s water treatment system, while city demand has risen. NMMC is maintaining regular supply and will decide after Diwali whether cuts are needed; an official urged residents to conserve water. NMMC previously cited rainfall deficit, declining reserves and expected El Niño impacts.
Morbe did not overflow in 2022, reaching 87.62 metres, or in 2020, when it reached 86.94 metres. It overflowed on August 20, 2025; August 29, 2024; September 24, 2023; September 28, 2021; August 4, 2019; July 24, 2018; August 25, 2017; August 13, 2013; August 28, 2011; August 9, 2008; and August 6, 2007.
Morbe Dam Storage Rises to 43% After Record Rainfall
Indiatimes · · Infrastructure
Morbe dam’s catchment received 333 mm of rain in 24 hours, raising storage to 43% from 26% the previous week and easing water-supply concerns.
Key facts
Morbe dam’s catchment area on Navi Mumbai’s outskirts received a record 333 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. After heavy rain over six days, storage rose to 43%, up from 26% the previous week. Extreme summer depletion had led to a 10% water cut, with further cuts under discussion. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation denied viral social media claims that the dam had overflowed, calling them a rumour.
Morbe Dam Is 42.48% Full, Navi Mumbai Civic Body Clarifies
The Free Press Journal · · Infrastructure
NMMC said Morbe Dam has not overflowed and is 42.48% full, after heavy rainfall and rumours circulated online.
Key facts
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) said on July 6, 2026, that Morbe Dam, its primary water source, had not overflowed and was 42.48% full. The dam, in Morbe, Khalapur taluka, Raigad district, stood at 72.85 metres after receiving 332.40 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours; its catchment had recorded 1,203.80 mm since June 1.
NMMC urged residents to ignore social media rumours and rely on official information. The viral claim referred instead to the Morbe Minor Irrigation Scheme in Panvel taluka, under the Water Resources Department, which overflowed on July 5. Amid heavy rain and strong winds, NMMC advised residents to stay indoors unless travel was essential.
Navi Mumbai Announces 10% Water Cut as Morbe Dam Reserves Fall
Hindustan Times · · Infrastructure
Navi Mumbai will cut water supply by 10% from Monday and suspend evening service on scheduled days until satisfactory rainfall improves Morbe dam levels.
Key facts
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) announced a 10% water cut across the city from Monday, with Morbe dam’s water stock below 20%. Usable stock is 36.87 million cubic metres (MCM), against the dam’s 190.89 MCM capacity. NMMC cited evaporation from high temperatures, rising consumption and uncertainty over monsoon conditions linked to El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The restrictions will continue until satisfactory rainfall improves reservoir levels.
Evening supply will be suspended twice weekly on a rotating basis: Belapur and Vashi on Mondays and Thursdays; Nerul and Koparkhairane on Tuesdays and Saturdays; Turbhe and Ghansoli on Wednesdays and Sundays. Airoli will have no evening supply on Fridays because of maintenance shutdowns linked to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran system; Digha’s supply will depend on its maintenance schedule. Supply from the Morbe system to CIDCO’s Kharghar and Kamothe nodes will be completely suspended every Friday for pipeline maintenance. Municipal commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde urged residents to conserve water.
Morbe Dam Reserves May Last 82 Days, NMMC Warns
Hindustan Times · · Infrastructure
NMMC warns Morbe dam’s usable reserves may last only 82 days, as it prepares contingency plans amid forecasts of delayed, below-normal monsoon rainfall.
Key facts
Navi Mumbai’s Morbe dam has 190.890 million cubic metres (MCM) of gross capacity, but storage is 72.262 MCM (37.85%). After a mandatory one-month emergency reserve, usable storage is 41.662 MCM (21.82%), enough for 82 days at current drawal. NMMC draws 476.85 million litres per day (MLD) of raw water from Morbe and supplies 415.40 MLD of treated water through more than 1.27 lakh connections; Barvi provides supplementary supply. No water cuts have been announced, but NMMC is preparing a summer contingency plan and may consider restrictions.
The IMD forecasts the monsoon at 92% of the Long Period Average, with onset around June 10 or 11. Morbe catchment averages 3,617 mm of annual rainfall; about 3,500 mm usually fills the reservoir, but officials estimate 3,600 mm may now be needed. At 92% of normal, rainfall could be around 3,327 mm, making a full reservoir unlikely.
A scheduled 24-hour shutdown on May 13 and 14 will cover Belapur, Nerul, Vashi, Turbhe, Sanpada, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, Airoli, Kharghar and Kamothe. Works include Bhokarpada treatment facility repairs, Morbe pipeline leak repairs near Agroli bridge and beneath the bridge near Chikhale village, valve installation, SCADA upgrades and pre-monsoon maintenance.
