The National Highways Authority of India’s 46-km bypass between Melur in Madurai and Karaikudi in Sivaganga is expected to be completed by March 2026. Construction began in March 2020. The four-lane corridor comprises 27 km from Melur to Thirupathur and 19 km from Thirupathur to Karaikudi. It starts at the Tiruchy National Highway in Melur, passes through Thirupathur and Pillayarpatti, connects to Kundrakudi and ends at Karaikudi. A toll plaza has been established at Brahamanapatti, 20 km from Melur. The project cost rose from ₹756 crore to ₹1,070 crore, and 177 hectares were acquired. Earthwork, granular sub-base, wet mix macadam and bituminous pavement macadam are complete; road markings and lighting remain. Interchanges are planned every 1.5–2 km, with service roads to Thaniyamangalam, Eriyur, Thirupathur, Kundrakudi and Pillayarpatti. The bypass is expected to cut travel time from 1 hour 15 minutes to about 40 minutes by avoiding villages.
