Parties Back Mehram Nagar Villagers Protesting Eviction Notices
thehindu · · Regulatory
AAP and Congress backed Mehram Nagar villagers protesting eviction notices, as residents challenged the proposed removal of homes from government-owned land near IGI Airport.
Key facts
AAP and Congress joined a mahapanchayat on Sunday protesting recent eviction notices in Mehram Nagar, near Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 1D. The village has more than 15,000 residents; villagers say it is over 300 years old. The National Security Guard (NSG) established a base there in 1986.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said his party would oppose demolitions and questioned the NSG’s reasons for seeking eviction, except on national-security grounds. A government official said the land belongs to the government and residents knew they were occupying it; the notices were not issued overnight.
AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh pledged support for the villagers. Singh cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election promise, “jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan,” and said AAP would oppose demolition action.
Delhi PWD Plans Y-Shaped Flyover Near Terminal-1 Intersection
Hindustan Times · · Infrastructure
Delhi PWD plans a Y-shaped flyover near Terminal-1 to ease congestion, with traffic volumes reaching 200,000 vehicles in 24 hours on the stretch.
Key facts
Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) plans a Y-shaped flyover at the Terminal-1 intersection, where Dwarka Road and Ullan Batar Road meet near NSG headquarters. One arm would connect NSG headquarters to Mehram Nagar East; the other would lead towards Dwarka Road, bypassing traffic signals and separating local traffic from surface-level movement. The stretch carries 3,500–5,200 passenger car units (PCU) per hour on Ullan Batar Road, 300–4,500 PCU on Dwarka Road from the east junction, 2,500–3,500 PCU on the NH48 Gurugram side, and 1,000 PCU of local traffic. More than 150,000–200,000 vehicles cross it in 24 hours.
PWD has invited bids for feasibility studies for an approximately 8-km elevated road linking Rani Jhansi Road to Punjabi Bagh West Metro Station via Anand Parbat and Zakhira, and a 0.5-km underpass near Crown Plaza red light in Mayur Vihar. In April, minister Parvesh Verma said 18 flyover and corridor projects were at planning or feasibility stages. Proposals include congestion measures along 55 km of Mahatma Gandhi Marg on the Outer Ring Road; a 20-km corridor along the Western Yamuna Canal (Munak Canal); extending UER-II towards Narela Metro station; a 4-km intervention at Shadipur Depot and another at ITO; a 6-km corridor from Nanaksar Gurudwara T-point to the Delhi–Uttar Pradesh border in Tronica City; and a 2.20-km corridor from Zakhira crossing to Karampura flyover.
