Vellore Demolishes 80 Encroachments Along Arcot Road
thehindu · · Infrastructure
Vellore Corporation removed 80 mostly commercial structures along Arcot Road, widening available road space by 15 to 40 feet before planned road works.
Key facts
Vellore Corporation demolished 80 structures, mostly shops, along Arcot Road near Christian Medical College Hospital to restore the road’s original width and improve traffic flow. The removals will provide 15 to 40 feet of additional road space; the road will be re-laid and a median installed to help pedestrians cross safely.
The affected 5.2-km stretch runs from Konavattam to the Chennai–Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) service lane near the Collectorate at Kagithapattarai. The drive followed orders from Collector P.S. Leela Alex and involved revenue and Corporation officials and around 50 police personnel. Arcot Road serves government buses between Bagayam and Katpadi railway stations and connects Old Town with Sathuvachari and Rangapuram.
In 2023, the stretch was re-laid under the Rural Roads scheme 2022–23 at a cost of ₹1.5 crore, with a 10-foot width including carriageway and footpath; a damaged storm-water drain section was also reconstructed.
Saduperi Tank Rejuvenation Advances With ₹19 Crore Project
The Hindu · · Infrastructure
Vellore’s ₹19 crore Saduperi tank rejuvenation includes deepening, visitor amenities and a new road connecting it to nearby Corporation areas.
Key facts
The Water Resources Department (WRD) began rejuvenation work at Saduperi irrigation tank in March under the Rehabilitation and Restoration of Twin Lakes scheme. Minister Duraimurugan inspected the work on July 2, 2025, and urged officials to expedite it; tank deepening is nearing completion.
Spread over 250 hectares, the tank stores an average of 205 mcft and is being desilted to its original depth of 6.5 metres to hold more monsoon rainwater. It recharges groundwater across 8–10 surrounding villages, whose farming communities rely on it. More than 15,000 residents in at least eight villages depend on the tank for water; local bodies have laid borewells around its bund.
Plans include a 1.5-km tiled walking track with handrails, steel seating and lighting; two central islands planted with native trees to attract migratory birds; and boating facilities. A 2-metre-high steel fence will run for 1,700 metres to deter dumping. A roughly 2-km bitumen road will connect the tank with Thorapadi and Konavattam, reducing a detour by 8–10 km and improving WRD access during monsoon. Vellore has 519 tanks; WRD maintains 101, including 16 in Vellore taluk.
