The Kharegaon underpass on the Mumbai–Nashik Highway will be closed to private and heavy vehicles from December 15 to April 9 for road-widening work. It connects both sides of the highway and serves commuters travelling between Kalwa–Mumbra, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi and Kalyan-Dombivli, as well as towards Nashik, Gujarat, Panvel and the Konkan region.
- Mumbai-side vehicles approaching Kharegaon should turn left at Kharegaon Toll Plaza and proceed via Gammon Parsik Circle.
- Vehicles coming from the Nashik side should divert through Saket Cut.
- Vehicles travelling towards Bhiwandi and Thane should use the Kharegaon Parsik Circle–Gammon Circle–Kharegaon Toll Plaza route and continue via Kharegaon–Kalwa Naka.
- Police, fire brigade, ambulance and other emergency and essential-service vehicles are exempt from the restrictions.

Three-day repairs on Ghodbunder Road and widening work on an alternate route caused severe delays on the Mumbra-Kharegaon and Thane-Ghodbunder stretches.

Repair work at Gaimukh Ghat caused major congestion on the Mumbra-Kharegaon and Thane-Ghodbunder roads on Friday, August 8, 2025. Commuters reported delays exceeding an hour for journeys usually taking 10–20 minutes. Road patching from Kajupada to Nira Kendra covered stretches of 300–400 metres; queues extended from Kharegaon toll plaza to Kausa. Heavy vehicles from Navi Mumbai, Mahape and Dombivli, including thousands travelling daily from JNPT Port through Gaimukh Ghat towards Gujarat, were affected. Road widening on the Kharegaon toll naka alternative worsened congestion.
The Highway Authority announced three days of urgent Ghodbunder Road repairs. Heavy-vehicle restrictions on Gaimukh Ghat ran from midnight August 8 until 5 a.m. August 11. Diversions included Kapurbawdi → Kasheli → Majiwada → Kharegaon → Mankoli → Anjur Phata. Vehicles from Mumbai/Thane were stopped at V Junction and Kapurbawdi Junction and redirected via Nashik Road, Kharegaon Toll, Mankoli and Anjur Phata; those from Mumbra/Kalwa were stopped at Kharegaon Toll Naka and diverted via Mankoli and Anjur Phata.
