Stream Encroachments Reported to Cause Flooding in Ketti Valley

Residents allege farm encroachments have narrowed two streams in Ketti valley, causing floods that damage farmlands and sometimes inundate village roads.

Encroachments along two streams flowing from Adhigaratti and Gandhipettai into Kattery Dam are causing localised flooding in Ketti valley, residents allege. Farm owners have narrowed parts of the streams by dumping sand and mud along the banks to expand their land. C. Subramani, Ward 7 councillor in Adhigaratti town panchayat, said sections that should be 30–50 feet wide have narrowed to 10–15 feet or less. He had previously complained to the Nilgiris district collector.
Residents said iron bridges have also been built across the streams. Flooding affects farms, including those of smaller farmers, and sometimes covers roads to villages with soil and rainwater. They urged the revenue department to remove encroachments and restore stream width. A senior revenue official responsible for Coonoor taluk said the issue had not been brought to the department’s attention and promised to look into solutions.
The streams feed the Kateri hydroelectric system. Kattery Dam, built in 1902, still supplies water to the Cordite factory in Aravankadu.
