Sewage Pollution Kills Thousands of Fish in Kakkalur Lake
dtnext · · Infrastructure
Unauthorised sewage inflows and alleged animal-waste dumping have polluted Kakkalur lake, killing thousands of fish and prompting residents to seek urgent intervention.
Key facts
Thousands of fish have died in Kakkalur lake, with dead fish seen along a 1 km stretch since Tuesday. Residents blame unauthorised domestic sewage inflows, including sewage from Tamil Nadu Housing Board residential quarters, and allege nearby meat shops dump animal waste. They have sought pollution control, cleanup and restoration.
The lake connects Kakkalur Panchayat and Tiruvallur, spans 194 acres and is 2,682 metres long. It has four sluice gates, two surplus channels and a storage capacity of 15 million cubic feet. Rejuvenated for ₹3.52 crore by the Rural Development Department under the state’s Namakku Naame scheme, it gained walking tracks, iron fencing and a visitor’s park and opened to the public in March.
District Collector S Kavitha said she had instructed Fisheries Department officials to investigate the fish deaths. She directed the municipality and local body to disconnect the illegal sewage connection and route sewage to the existing drain leading to the Sewage Treatment Plant.
