Delhi Seeks Haryana’s Help to Drain Floodwater from Jharoda Kalan

Delhi has asked Haryana to provide pumps and manpower to clear floodwater from Jharoda Kalan and parts of Najafgarh after a drain embankment breached.

A 50-foot embankment of the Mungeshpur drain breached on Tuesday evening, sending nearly five feet of water into Geetanjali Enclave and adjoining pockets of Jharoda Kalan near Baba Haridas Nagar. Nearly 2,000 people were evacuated. The breach has been repaired in coordination with Haryana, but Delhi is still pumping out water and has requested Haryana’s manpower and pumps. Evacuees are staying at Baba Haridas Temple and an MCD school in Jharoda.
The Chief Minister’s Office has begun arranging compensation for affected people and sought crop-loss reports from district magistrates in all 11 revenue districts. North, Central, East, Northeast, Southeast and Shahdara districts were majorly hit, though crops may also have been affected elsewhere. District magistrates must submit reports to the divisional commissioner’s office for forwarding to the CMO. The Chief Minister announced compensation on Tuesday for farmers whose crops were destroyed and directed officials to list affected farmers.
