MCZMA Clears Temporary Film Studios in Madh and Erangal

Hindustan Times · · Regulatory

Maharashtra’s coastal authority approved temporary film studios in Madh and Erangal, with permits capped at six months at a time and three years overall.

Key facts

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) approved temporary film studios in Madh and Erangal, after studios there faced punitive action in 2023 and 2024 over alleged coastal regulation violations. Municipal commissioners may permit studios on the landward side of existing roads or structures in CRZ-II, and beyond the no-development zone in CRZ-III. Permits may run for up to six months at a time, with a three-year aggregate limit.

A 2025 regulation under Development Control and Promotional Regulation (DCPR) 2034 allowed temporary studios; the matter was referred to MCZMA. Studios must meet CRZ notification conditions and may be required to manage solid waste and safely dispose of sewage. Studios and sets are barred in CRZ-I, CRZ-IV and CRZ-III no-development zones.

Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant called the BJP’s position hypocritical. Malvani MLA Aslam Shaikh said studios should be supported because Mumbai is known for Bollywood. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya declined to comment, saying the demolished Madh Island studios were 60-foot-high permanent structures.
