Palakkad Seeks Repairs to Chunnambuthara–Ayyapuram Road Before Festival

Manorama Online · · Infrastructure

Residents are seeking repairs to the damaged Chunnambuthara–Ayyapuram road and muddy railway underpass before traffic increases for the Kalpathi Ratholsavam.

Key facts

Residents have sought repairs to the Chunnambuthara–underpass–Shankhuvarathodu–Ayyapuram road before the Kalpathi Ratholsavam, when traffic increases. The road from the underpass slope to Ayyapuram has been damaged for months, and the stretch up to Shankhuvarathodu bridge is in poor condition. Temporary repairs are needed. Road upgrades have begun in Kalpathi, while the municipality says steps are progressing to renovate the Chunnambuthara–Ayyapuram road to a high standard.

The railway-built underpass is muddy and waterlogged because it lies in a low area. Two-wheeler riders have slipped, and passing vehicles splash mud onto pedestrians. Commuters have repeatedly sought action to clear the muddy water, including before the festival.

Chunnambuthara Service Road to Receive Repairs After Sections Cave In

onmanorama · · Infrastructure

Palakkad’s Chunnambuthara service road is caving in at several points, prompting an immediate repair order and preliminary reconstruction estimate of ₹35 lakh.

Key facts

The Chunnambuthara service road connecting to the Pattikkara bypass has crumbled and caved in across several sections. District Collector M S Madhavikutty ordered immediate repairs after damage beside the railway overbridge raised concerns it could spread toward the bridge. Continuous rain has worsened the damage.

The road is under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI); the Public Works Department’s National Highway wing is carrying out repairs on NHAI’s behalf. Preliminary estimates put reconstruction at at least ₹35 lakh. A detailed estimate will be submitted to NHAI, which is expected to sanction the work soon following district administration intervention. Decisions, including whether to recover construction costs, will be taken later. Unscientific excavation alongside the road for pipes and cables is suspected of triggering the cave-in.

Chunnambuthara Service Road Erosion Threatens Railway Overbridge

Malayala Manorama · · Infrastructure

Ongoing erosion has brought the Chunnambuthara service road within two metres of the railway overbridge, prompting one-way traffic and calls for urgent repairs.

Key facts

Erosion on the Chunnambuthara railway overbridge service road has reached within 2 metres of the bridge, and in some places closer. It continues, with water flowing beneath the collapsed section. Cracks extend for at least 25 metres, and the entire affected stretch may need rebuilding; continued heavy rain could worsen the damage. Residents and commuters have raised safety concerns. The service road has been restricted to one-way traffic, with vehicles using the opposite side; this causes congestion during peak hours and will continue until reconstruction is complete. Municipal chairperson Prameela Sasidharan and ward councillor K. Jayalakshmi said authorities had been informed. There are allegations that, apart from the district collector, other departments have not intervened strongly.

Leaking Water Pipe Causes Road Collapse in Palakkad’s Chunnambuthara

onmanorama · · Infrastructure

A week-long water-pipe leak caused Chunnambuthara Road to collapse, damaging an electric post, injuring a motorcyclist and cutting power to over 300 homes.

Key facts

Part of the road to Ram Nagar, beneath the Chunnambuthara bridge, collapsed after a drinking-water pipe leaked for over a week. The road connects Palakkad to Olavakode via Jainimedu. Mundoor resident A Sharat, 31, fell into the ditch at about 8 p.m. and sustained a minor leg injury; he was treated at a private hospital in Olavakod.

The collapse damaged an electric post, shutting off streetlights and leaving more than 300 houses in Chunnambuthara, Ram Nagar, Pranamkulam and Indrani Nagar without power. KSEB officials said electricity would be fully restored by morning. Residents, led by municipal permanent health samiti chairman P Smithesh and ward councillor K Jayalakshmi, cordoned off the road and diverted traffic; North police managed traffic.

Municipal representatives and residents had repeatedly alerted the water authority about the leak. Municipal members, including the chairman, protested outside its office, demanding repairs to roads dug up for the drinking-water project and action to stop the leak.
