Ramanagara district renamed Bengaluru South by Karnataka

Karnataka's cabinet approved renaming Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South, with Ramanagara remaining as headquarters.

Key facts

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that Ramanagara district will be renamed Bangalore South. The district headquarters will remain in Ramanagara, approximately 50 km from Bengaluru. The renamed district will consist of Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna and Harohalli taluks. The renaming has no financial implications. A notification will be issued and land records will be updated accordingly. The Central government had previously objected to the renaming, but Shivakumar stated that informing the Centre was mandatory procedure and that district renaming is a state subject. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil clarified that the decision stands as land records are a state matter.
