Ludhiana authority identifies 47 illegal commercial buildings on canal road
Hindustan Times · · Regulatory
GLADA identified 47 unauthorized commercial buildings along Sidhwan Canal road in Ludhiana and ordered their removal.
Key facts
Acting on Punjab and Haryana High Court directions, Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) identified 47 unauthorised commercial buildings along Sidhwan Canal road stretch from Ferozepur Road to Ladhowal bypass. The identification followed a petition by Ludhiana Citizen Association NGO seeking enforcement of planning norms and removal of unauthorised structures along the canal corridor between NH-95A and NH-44.
Detailed survey found 47 illegal commercial establishments including restaurants and business outlets violating approved land use norms.
GLADA status report noted: 25 applications relating to 21 unauthorised establishments received under 2013 regularisation policy were rejected after scrutiny; four applications concerning three establishments submitted under 2018 regularisation policy; regularisation certificates granted to one plot and two buildings under 2018 policy were cancelled.
GLADA issued warning directing violators to voluntarily remove or demolish illegal constructions at their own expense without delay. Non-compliance will invite strict action under Punjab Regional and Town Planning and Development Act, 1995, including sealing and demolition without further notice. Demolition costs will be recovered from violators. GLADA must submit action-taken report to HC in approximately two weeks.

Ludhiana's World Bank-funded 24x7 canal water supply project faces fresh leakages along Pakhowal Road, compromising water and road infrastructure.
Key facts
Public confidence in Ludhiana's 24x7 canal-based water supply project has declined after fresh leakages surfaced along Pakhowal Road, creating waterlogged hazards on busy thoroughfares. The World Bank-funded initiative, designed to modernise the city's water infrastructure, faces scrutiny over alleged lapses in engineering quality and official oversight. Water bursts reported near Indoor Stadium (opposite Bikaner Sweets) and Deep Filling Station resulted in loss of thousands of litres of treated water and compromised road surfaces. Vehicles getting stuck in mud from inadequate road repairs after pipe bursts. Similar structural failures recently reported in Model Town area. Mayor Inderjit Kaur gave officials a 20-day deadline to rectify technical snags, but issues persist. Civic activists allege contractors applying "band-aid" repairs rather than addressing underlying pressure or joint issues. Residents calling for full technical audit.
