Kullu Valley Flood Frequency Rises 68% Since 1990, Study Finds
thenewshimachal · · Infrastructure
A study of 1835–2020 records finds floods in five Kullu Valley drains have increased sharply, threatening lives, property, agriculture and tourism.
Key facts
A study by GB Pant National Himalayan Environmental Research Institute, Mohal (Kullu), Cumbria University, Delhi University and Himachal Pradesh University examined Kullu Valley flood patterns from 1835 to 2020. Submitted to the state government and National Disaster Management Authority in May 2025, it used British Library records and weather data from Naggar Fold and IARI’s Katrain station.
Flood frequency in Fozal, Sarvari, Kasol, Hurla and Mohal drains has risen 68% since 1990. From 1846 to 2020, Kullu district recorded 128 major floods across 59 sites; 87% occurred from June to September, and heavy rain and cloudbursts caused over half. Beas flooding has damaged bridges, farmland, orchards and infrastructure, disrupted highways and isolated tourist hubs.
In June 2025, Kasol (Grahan Nala) floods nearly swept away vehicles. In 2023, over 10 vehicles were washed away and the Bhuntar–Manikaran road closed, stranding nearly 10,000 tourists. Sarvari floods damaged water-supply schemes; Hurla floods destroyed orchards, farmland and a bailey bridge. In August 2025, Khokhan drain washed away eight vehicles and damaged private land and horticultural fields.
The study recommends drain embankments, bans on nearby construction and mining, and relocating vulnerable residents. The Supreme Court has taken cognisance; downstream Punjab is also at risk.
