Ahmedabad Ring Road Service Roads Face Five-Kilometre Planning Hurdle

Ahmedabad’s SP Ring Road six-laning plan includes service roads, but 5km through non-town-planning areas needs new scheme drafts before they can be provided.

Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) requested the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to provide service roads along the 76km SP Ring Road as part of its six-laning upgrade. A 5km stretch passes through non-town-planning areas, where service roads are not planned; new town-planning scheme drafts are required. AMC has begun transferring possession of service-road land across the remaining 71km to AUDA, with non-town-planning areas to be addressed later.

AUDA developed the road in 2006 on a build-operate-transfer basis. Its width varies from 60m to 96m across sections. AUDA approved two tenders worth ₹2,200 crore for the six-laning project. The plan also includes two new three-lane bridges beside existing bridges over the Sabarmati at Bhat and Kamod, and three six-lane underpasses at Bhat Circle, Chiloda Circle and Aslali Circle.

Asaram Ashram was allocated 33,980 sq. metres about four decades ago; its surveyed area is 49,758 sq. metres, including 15,778 sq. metres alleged encroachment: 6,489 in Survey No. 282-A, 3,185 in Talni and 6,104 on the Sabarmati riverbank. Sadashiv Prajnamandal must vacate 2,561 sq. metres. Shivnagar Vasahat has 126 houses.
