Bihar Seeks to Reclaim 51 Acres in Gorakhpur’s Betiahata

Bihar is verifying its claim to 51 acres in Betiahata, where about 300 homes house 1,500 residents facing possible eviction or land purchases.

Bihar claims a 51-acre Betiahata estate once owned by the Bettiah royal family, which has no heirs. The land includes government offices, residential buildings and private homes; private owners hold eight acres, with some land vacant. About 300 homes house nearly 1,500 people.

The Bihar Legislative Assembly passed a bill on November 26, 2024, which has been gazetted; detailed reclamation regulations are being drafted. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh authorities are verifying records and measuring land. Bihar Revenue Council Chairman K.K. Pathak is considering allowing private occupants to buy at twice the current circle rate. Residents may challenge the move in court.

The estate belonged to Raja Harendra Kishore Singh, who died without an heir in 1893. His widows died in 1896 and 1954; the estate has since been under the Court of Wards. Bihar is also scrutinising Bettiah properties in Maharajganj, Kushinagar and other districts, across eight districts in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
