Delhi Considers Diverting Yamuna Floodwater to Bhatti Mines and Floodplains

Hindustan Times · · Infrastructure

Delhi is studying whether Yamuna monsoon surplus can be diverted into Bhatti Mines pits and six floodplain sites to reduce flood risk and recharge groundwater.

Key facts

Delhi’s irrigation and flood control department is exploring diversion of excess monsoon water from the Yamuna into 15 Bhatti Mines pits and six floodplain sites. The pits, formed by mining between 1960 and 1990, have a stated combined capacity of 5,200 MLD (5,200,000 cubic metres per day). A Central Ground Water Board study said they could receive 4,200 million litres of surplus runoff for 60 days; officials said three fillings a year could store up to 12,600 million litres. The six floodplain sites together hold about 13,707,500 cubic metres. Sites include Old Bawana Escape (900,000 sq m; 1,350,000 cubic metres), South Old Bawana Escape (1,170,000 sq m; 1,755,000 cubic metres) and Mayur Vihar (3.12 million sq m; 4,680,000 cubic metres), plus areas near Sabapur, Wazirabad barrage and the railway and ITO bridges. The sites may not handle peak flows. The plan requires pit desilting and water-quality monitoring; polluted water could contaminate groundwater. Earlier check dams at JNU and Sanjay Van (1996–98) achieved 95%–99.7% recharge efficiency and up to 300% capacity use through repeated filling.

Modi Inaugurates Delhi Metro Phase IV’s First Section

ETRealty · · Infrastructure

Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2.8-km Janakpuri West–Krishna Park Extension section and launched the foundation stone for the 26.5-km Rithala–Kundli corridor.

Key facts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Janakpuri West–Krishna Park Extension section, the first stretch of Delhi Metro Phase IV, and laid the foundation stone for the Rithala–Kundli corridor on January 5, 2025.

Krishna Park Extension station brings the network to 289 stations spanning 394.448 km. The new section extends the operational Botanical Garden–Janakpuri West Magenta Line, which now covers approximately 40 km. The line is scheduled to extend from Krishna Park Extension to R K Ashram Marg in phases by 2026.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is building 86 km of new lines across five corridors. Janakpuri West–R K Ashram Marg, Majlis Park–Maujpur and Aerocity–Tughlakabad are under construction; Lajpat Nagar–Saket-G Block and Indraprastha–Inderlok are at pre-tendering stage. DMRC will receive 52 trains under the RS-17 contract for priority corridors.

The 26.5-km Rithala–Kundli corridor will have 21 stations, serving Rohini, Bawana and Kundli and connecting Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh with residential, commercial and industrial zones.
