Madurai Ring Road Opens to Traffic Between Dindigul and Tiruchi Highways

NHAI has completed Madurai’s 29.66-km access-controlled ring road, costing ₹1,024.66 crore, and vehicles have begun using it ahead of toll operations.

NHAI has completed the 29.66-km greenfield Madurai Ring Road, the city’s second ring road, connecting Vadipatti and Thamaraipatti between the Dindigul and Tiruchi highways. Vehicles from the Dindigul or Coimbatore region can bypass Madurai to reach the Tiruchi highway, and vice versa.

The access-controlled road crosses Natham Road, Alagarkoil Road and Alanganallur Road. Underpasses, overpasses and flyovers have been provided at major junctions. A wildlife overpass with perimeter barricading has been built at Waguthamalai.

Launched in 2020, the ₹1,024.66-crore project was delayed by Covid and farmers’ protests over land acquisition. Commercial operations are due to begin in the next few days. The Ilavankulam toll plaza near Alanganallur has four toll gates on each carriageway; toll operations are being trialled. PTZ cameras along the entire stretch are part of an Advanced Traffic Management System to capture incidents and unauthorised parking.
