NGT approves waste-management facility in Punjabi Bagh
Hindustan Times · · Regulatory
India's green tribunal rejected a challenge to a municipal waste-compacting station in Delhi's Punjabi Bagh, saying it complies with rules.
Key facts
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) refused to interfere with establishment of a Fixed Compactor Transfer Station (FCTS) in Guddad Wala Mohalla, Punjabi Bagh. FCTS is a hydraulic waste-management unit designed to receive, compact, and store segregated municipal solid waste in urban areas. A plea challenged the facility, arguing it violated Central Pollution Control Board siting criteria, was in a densely populated area close to a place of worship and school, and conflicted with designated land use. NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Afroz Ahmad found no reliable material showing siting criteria violation. The bench noted 80 per cent of construction was already complete. The tribunal dismissed the plea but directed the FCTS must strictly comply with CPCB standard operating procedures, and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee must ensure no violations during operation. The tribunal allowed the petitioner to submit a representation to the MCD Commissioner regarding mismanagement of an existing dhalao in the area.
