Many projects have missed their deadlines, and real estate builders are pointing to labor shortages as the primary culprit. Developers have attempted to recruit workers from the National Capital Region (NCR), but these efforts have not met with a desirable outcome. Consequently, many builders are now expanding their search, seeking manpower from other states across India.
Noida Extension Particularly Affected
Developers in Noida Extension have been particularly hard hit by the labor shortage. Although they have recently secured approval to resume construction work following a year-long ban, the shortage continues to present an imposing obstacle. The residential projects are advancing at a glacial pace, hindered by inconsistent worker attendance. Furthermore, the Greater Noida Authority is applying pressure on developers to meet delivery timelines, urging them to increase their workforce or extend working hours.

Mr. Vijay Trivedi, vice chairman of NEFOMA, the Noida Extension flat owners’ association, commented that the projects are already behind schedule, expressing his disappointment at the prospect of further delays. "The date is already delayed. The news of more delay is really embarrassing and depressing," Mr. Trivedi conveyed. He furthermore emphasized the importance of implementing effective strategies and thorough planning to address the situation.
Builders Acknowledge the Challenge
Builders in Noida Extension acknowledge the need to find pragmatic solutions to the labor shortage. Amit Gupta, Managing Director of Orris Group, revealed that the group has been in contact with contractors from other regions to secure workers, but lamented the exorbitant rates demanded by these contractors. "They are demanding exorbitant rates for sending their workers," Mr. Gupta stated.
Developers Seek Solutions
Orris Group, which has ongoing projects in Gurgaon and along the Yamuna Expressway, has expressed its willingness to improve compensation packages and provide housing to attract workers. Mr. Gupta elaborated that the Orris Group has dispatched representatives to several indian states with the aim of recruiting much-needed manpower.
Government Schemes and their Impact
A recent report suggests a correlation between rising prices and government social programs such as the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).
