Ludhiana truckers oppose effluent plant in Transport Nagar
Hindustan Times · · Infrastructure
Truckers object to the district administration's plan to build a common effluent treatment plant in Transport Nagar, citing congestion and insufficient parking space.
Key facts
Deputy Commissioner Jorwal directed Ludhiana Improvement Trust on November 20 to identify suitable land in Transport Nagar for a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) to handle industrial waste from dyeing units polluting local waterbodies. The plant must comply with zero liquid discharge principles and regulations from Punjab Pollution Control Board and Central Pollution Control Board.
Truckers have raised objections, claiming Transport Nagar is already congested. Charan Singh Lohara, chairman of Ludhiana Goods' Transport Association, noted that owners of modern trucks up to 40 feet long already struggle to find parking space. Darshan Singh, president of the association, submitted a memorandum requesting the CETP be relocated to a less congested area.
Ludhiana currently has three CETP plants: two on Tajpur Road (one serving Focal Point industrial area, one for Tajpur Road industries) and one on Bahadur Ke Road serving dyeing units.
